The federal government has decided to shut down cellular phone services in 25 cities on Thursday and Friday to protect gatherings and processions being held in connection with Yaum-e-Ashura.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has sent the list of cities to mobile phone companies.
After staying on for some hours, mobile phone services have once again been turned off in parts of Pakistan to ensure security on Ashura, (The 10th of Muharram) which will be observed today (Friday) with traditional religious solemnity.
The mobile phone services have already started going down in vulnerable cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Karachi, Quetta, Peshawar, Hyderabad, Chakwal, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Jhang, Narowal, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, Layyah, Rahimyar Khan, Sargodha, Bhakkar, Multan, Toba Tek Singh, Chiniot, Pakpattan, Khairpur, Sehwan, Nawabshah, Larkana Dera Ismail Khan, Kohat, Hangu, Lakki Marwat and Bannu.
Sources say the mobile phone service will also be blocked on the routes of Muharram processions in specific cities.
