NEW DELHI: India’s new Prime Minister Narendra Modi is holding landmark talks with his Pakistani counterpart, Nawaz Sharif on his first day on the job.

The May 27 meeting marks the first time an Indian prime minister has hosted a Pakistani leader for official talks in New Delhi since the breakdown in relations following the 2008 attacks by Pakistani militants in Mumbai, in which 166 people were killed.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi received Nawaz Sharif and after a handshake the two leaders went for talks in the conference room of Hyerabad House.

9:50 am: Prakash Javadekar, who has been given the responsibility of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (Independent Charge), said he has called the officials and will take charge around afternoon after holding discussions with them. Javadekar further assured press freedom.
9:49 am: Arun Jaitley is all set to assume charge as Finance Minister. He will also head the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and Defence.

Sharif will visit Jama Masjid at 8:30 am. He will later go to Red Fort. Sharif is scheduled to hold talks with PM Modi at around 12:10 pm.
8:10 am: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif and other leaders from the SAARC countries today in one of his first engagements after taking charge.
8:05 am:Modi’s first meeting today will be with Afghan President Hamid Karzai at Hyderabad House at 9.30 am.
8:00 am: Narendra Modi will today officially take charge of the new government.

Modi is regarded with deep suspicion by many in Pakistan after anti-Muslim riots in his home state of western Gujarat in 2002 killed at least 1,000 people.

Modi is also due to hold brief one-on-one meetings with the leaders of Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Mauritius, and Maldives.

Modi took the oath as India’s 15th prime minister on May 26 after leading the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party to a decisive victory in general elections.
